about 35CAPi5t (sketches, process, + more content)

35CAPi5t is a capsule collection I designed while studying at FIDM for my AA in Fashion Design back in 2024. We were given 10 weeks to design, pattern draft, and sew our collection. At first, I wasn't sure if I should had made my designs less detailed so that I'd have better time management, but I thought that since it was my last quarter that I should just go all out and squeeze in as much sewing time as possible. Absolutely zero rest. lol.

My collection, "35CAPi5t", is about escaping from harsh realities and the need to continue to move forward from them. Growing up, I would always turn to video games, anime, music, or drawing whenever things would go bad (parents fighting, reliving traumatic experiences, yadda yadda...). As I was conceptualizing my collection, I realized nothing much has changed from the child I used to be and my current self. I still play the same games, watch the same shows, and listen to the same music whenever an other horrible thing happens. I felt as though I was stuck in this unhealthy cycle of never really confronting my feelings or taking the time to understand them, and designing this collection has helped create a new reality for myself where I can overcome my traumatic experiences and turn them into something empowering.

Above is my moodboard with all sorts of mumbo jumbo. It might not make a whole lot of sense, but its just a big collage of all the things I like and help take my mind off of things. I was super inspired by the transformations from Shugo Chara, Goli Matsumoto's animation for TЁЯRA's DoLL MV, and old Windows UI (more specificlly Windows95); so in my designs I mix together soft ruffles, lace, and ribbon onto angular stylized seams and hems that mimic mecha robots. I think the contrast of putting ruffles into the strong defined seamlines is pleasing to see because the ruffles make the hard edges seem really soft. Then as for the colorway, the classic blue and white from Windows UI is unbeatable (I also just really like the color blue) so I guess you could say there's inspiration from tenshi kaiwai fashion in my designs.

Here are my sketches of my initial designs! Because of time constraints they're a bit different to how the final look came out, but I'm still pretty satisfied that I was even able to get all of the other little details put together within 10 weeks (10 weeks of doing this class and juggling 4 other classes for the quarter...).

Now it is time to get into some bits of the pattern drafting and sewing! Which isn't a whole lot because I didn't take as many pictures...

Only thing I want to get across is just proof I made this, and that I also tried to dye some of my fabric. I will try my best to get better process pictures of my projects in the future o7

LASTLY!!! SOME EXTRA CONTENT!!!

My friends and I did a small fashion show to showcase student work! It was a lot of fun and very stressful to put together, but the turnout for it did not dissapoint! Twas a huge success!! :3

Here's a silly little video I edited of clips my model (Jerah) and I took throughout the day of the show! It starts with my day in the morning when I presented my collection to my class, to venue arrival for the show, getting ready, rehearsal, and then runway. And yes, everything was recorded on my 3DS! :^D

If you're interested, you can look at more from the show on finalgirl.xyz! I highly suggest you should because so many amazing and talented people put in so much time and effort into their projects!
